Comics, the Internet and Freedom of Information
This month we’ll be talking about comics and FOIs. If FOI sounds like a bit of a dry subject, prepare to be challenged. We’ll be looking at the stories and scandals FOI has kickstarted around the world.
Thanks to a fantastic crowdfunding campaign, we’ll also welcome Finnish artists Siiri Viljakka and Lauri Tuomi-Nikula from Finland, who’ll be explaining how comics might just be the best medium for educating a new generation of FOI users, and how the internet could be the saviour of FOI–a fundamental human right that celebrates its 250th anniversary this year.
Our three talks on October 25th are…
Gemma Humphrys from mySociety will be talking about what stories Alaveteli sites from around the world have uncovered. Alaveteli is an open-source platform for making public freedom of information requests.
Richard Taylor will be speaking about why WhatDoTheyKnow is administered, what happens when public authorities don’t redact sensitive information properly.
Myf Nixon will be interviewing Siiri and Lauri about FOI in Finland and about their excellent project Last Words–The Return of Anders Chydenius. A homage to Anders Chydenius (1729-1803), a politician from the Finnish town of Kokkola, the man behind the implementation of the world’s first Freedom of the Press Act.
